5 tips for being a great host this holiday season

Most of us have thrown a good party before, but the stress of getting everything right got in the way of making it great. Here are my top 5 tips for easy and effortless entertaining - every time.

1. SET THE MOOD

Think lighting, music, scent. Dim bright overhead lights and instead use lamps and candles (lots of them!) to create ambience.

Pro tip: Avoid scented candles so they don't compete with natural food aromas. Instead, create your own simmer pot for a natural festive scent.

2. SERVE A SIGNATURE COCKTAIL

There's no better way to get a party started than handing your guests a cocktail as soon as they walk in. Pick a drink that matches the mood and theme, or represents you as the host. A few of our favourite winter warmers are this Cinnamon Bourbon Fizz, a festive Frosted Mistletoe Margarita and holiday pick-me-up Chai Espresso Martini.

3. MAKE (OR PICK) A GREAT PLAYLIST

Music has the power to set the tone for an entire evening. Whether you prefer soft jazz, holiday classics or festive favourites, don't forget to make it merry!

4. ADD A PERSONAL TOUCH

Great parties are all about the details. Create custom place cards with items you already have in the house - like these rosemary wreaths. All you need is rosemary, twine (or ribbon), and paper!

5. SET A BEAUTIFUL TABLE

Nothing makes the holidays more special than friends and family gathering around a table. Make yours memorable with the tablescape starter kit from the Gather Collection.

Pro tip: Add some fresh greenery and extra ornaments you have handy for an effortlessly elegant look.
